The third annual Highland Open Table Tennis Tournament was held on November 18th -19th at the Lincoln Center Fieldhouse in Highland, IN.  This 3-star event featured 32 tables in excellent playing conditions that attracted 181 players from a dozen states.  Prize money and trophies exceeded $3,500 for the 19 rating, age and open events.  The South Bend TTC was the organizer of the tournament, which was sponsored by Lake County ’s South Shore Sports Promotions, and Highland Parks & Recreation.

In the Open Singles, Chicago’s Sasa Drinic cruised through the early rounds and defeated 5-Time US Men’s Champion Dan Seemiller Sr of New Carlisle, 4-1 in the semifinals.  All continued to go in Drinic’s favor as he took a commanding 3 games to 1 lead over Mishawaka’s Mark Hazinski in the final.  Hazinski then began to mount his comeback, showing the form that earned him a spot on the 2004 Athens Olympic games.   Drinic and Hazinski electrified the appreciative crowd with an astonishing array of shots from all over the court.  In the end, Hazinski was too strong, and claimed the championship prize with a 4-3 victory.

In an equally exciting match, it was Hazinski and Seemiller Sr teaming up to win the Open Doubles championship by defeating Drinic and Paul Pashuku, 4 games to 1.

In an event featuring two of the nation’s top junior players, Joe Cochran beat his South Bend teammate AJ Brewer 3 games to 1 in the finals of the Under Age 18 Event.  Brewer, as a member of the US Cadet team recently returned from a three week training camp in China , and the World Cadet Championships in Serbia .  Cochran will be representing the United States in the World Junior Championships in Egypt next month.

Brewer’s 9 year old brother CJ also had an impressive showing, before losing in the finals of the Under Age 14 Event 3-1 to Natalia Snigurskaya of Montgomery, IL.
